Notes for homeowners and drivers

The advice here is the kind you would get from a friend in the trade over a kitchen table: what matters, what does not, what to do about it. Locks for homes, keys for cars, hardware for businesses, and the sensible habits that keep all of them working.

Questions people ask us

Lockout Services

Can you open an interior door such as a locked bathroom or bedroom?

Yes, and these are usually gentle jobs. Privacy locks on bathroom and bedroom doors are built with a small emergency release on the outside, and when that has been painted over or stripped a locksmith can still operate the latch from outside with the right tool. Older interior doors with a keyed mortise lock or a bit key are opened by picking or by cutting a key to the lock. The door and trim stay as they were. Home Lockout Service

We have just taken over a unit and have no keys for the old locks. Is that a lockout?

It is treated as one, with the same authority check: your new lease and identification settle it. The locksmith opens the previous occupant's locks, then rekeys or replaces them so keys still floating around from the last tenant stop working. It is also the moment to decide how the unit will be keyed: one key for every door, separate keys for the cash office and stockroom, or cores that suit a growing staff. Business Lockout Service

It broke while I was locking up and now the door is open. What should I do?

Stay with the door if you can, or ask a neighbour to keep an eye on it, and call. When the locksmith arrives the fragment is removed and securing the door comes ahead of everything else, so you can leave. If the cylinder needs more than a clean, a replacement goes on during that visit rather than leaving the door on a latch overnight. Broken Key Extraction

What should I have ready when I call about a break-in?

Whether the police have been called and any occurrence number; whether everyone is safe and the property is empty of intruders; which opening was forced and whether it closes at all; whether the damage is to the lock, the frame, the door or the glass; whether keys, remotes or codes were taken; whether you own, rent or manage the property; and whether there is glass beside the door. Photos on your phone help the locksmith bring the right hardware. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

My locks are different brands. Is that a problem?

Not a problem, just a detail to plan around. What matters is the keyway, meaning the profile of the slot the key fits, rather than the name on the lock. Different makers sometimes share a profile and sometimes do not. Where two cylinders cannot accept the same key, one is exchanged for a compatible cylinder in the same finish and pinned to match. From the outside the door looks the same and from your pocket it is one key. Lock Rekeying

Can the new deadbolt use the same key as my other doors?

Usually, yes. If the new lock shares a keyway with your existing cylinders, the locksmith repins it on the bench so your current key operates it, and nothing changes on anyone's ring. If the keyways differ, the other doors can be brought onto the new key instead. Say which key you want to keep before the hardware is chosen, because keyway is part of picking the lock. Deadbolt Installation

Which finishes stand up to salt and winter?

Finish is one of the three categories on the residential hardware label, and it covers exposure to sun, humidity, salt and skin oils. In practice, PVD brass, satin nickel and stainless finishes tolerate a salted driveway well, powder-coated black holds up when it is not chipped, and traditional lacquered brass tends to bloom green where salt reaches it. A storm door or a small overhang helps any finish, and wiping salt off in a thaw helps more. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Can you make a key for a lock that has none?

Yes. A bit key is cut to the lock rather than copied from another key: the locksmith chooses a blank of the right size and files the bit until it clears the wards and lifts the levers inside your case, testing as they go. A pin-tumbler cylinder on a later lock is decoded or rekeyed and keys cut to it. Bring any loose keys that came with the house, since one may be close enough to serve as a starting pattern. High Security Locks

How often should a safe combination be changed?

There is no fixed schedule; the sensible trigger is a change in who knows it, such as an employee or manager leaving, rather than a set number of months or years. A combination that has only ever been known to current staff generally does not need changing on a routine basis, since the lock itself does not wear out from correct use the way a mechanical part might. Safe Opening & Combination Change

How often does the battery need replacing on an electronic lock?

Most electronic locks give a low-battery warning, usually a beep or flashing light, well before they actually stop working, and replacing the battery within that same week is the safer habit rather than waiting. Depending on how often the safe is opened, a battery commonly lasts somewhere between one and several years, and keeping a spare of the correct type near the safe avoids a search once the warning starts. Safe Installation & Servicing

What is bumping, and does this stop it?

Bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck while under light turning pressure, bouncing the pins to the shear line for an instant so an ordinary cylinder opens. It works on many standard pin tumblers. A high security cylinder needs its sidebar released by separately positioned finger or rotating pins at the same moment, and a bump key cannot set those, so the plug stays locked. It is one of the clearest advantages of the upgrade. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks

Can the work be done while we are open?

Yes, and many businesses prefer it. The locksmith works one door at a time, finishing and testing each before starting the next, and leaves the main entrance until a quiet moment or until after closing. Doors staff are using are done last and their new keys are handed over first. Where a business would rather nobody sees the work, an early morning or after-hours window is arranged instead. Commercial Rekeying

Can different lock brands be mixed in one master key system?

Sometimes, but it depends on the keyway and pinning platform each brand uses; some are compatible with one another and some are not. Where a mix already exists on a property, the assessment identifies which cylinders can be brought into a single hierarchy and which need replacing with a matching platform so every level pins correctly across the whole set of doors. Master Key System Design

Do we still need physical keys after this is installed?

On hardware that supports it, yes: a conventional cylinder sits alongside the electronic reader, cut to work like any other key on the property, though some access-controlled locks are built without one. Where it is fitted, it is meant as a fallback rather than the everyday way in: if a battery dies, a controller faults, or the power stays out longer than the backup lasts, the door still opens by key while the issue is sorted out. Access Control Installation

Can I still lock the door from outside?

Yes. The releasing device only governs the inside of the door; the outside gets its own trim, a pull, a lever with a cylinder, or a keyed cylinder alone, chosen for how that door is entered. Locking or unlocking that outside trim has no effect on the inside crossbar, which always releases the latch under a push, so entry security and exit function are handled as two separate questions. Panic & Exit Hardware

Car Keys

How can I avoid locking myself out of the car again?

Make one habit stick: keys go into a pocket before any door closes. Keep a spare at home or with someone nearby, and store a spare fob away from the main one. Change your fob battery every autumn before the cold arrives. If your car offers a setting that stops the doors locking with the fob inside, turn it on. Keep a photo of your vehicle permit on your phone so identification is never behind glass. Car Lockout Service

What is a transponder key, and does my car have one?

A transponder is a small chip in the head of the key with no battery of its own. When the key is in the ignition, or the fob is inside the cabin, the immobilizer sends a signal and the chip answers with a code; if the code is unknown, the engine is prevented from running. Every new light vehicle sold in Canada since September 2007 has been required to have an immobilizer, so almost any car from that time on uses one. Car Key Replacement

What should I bring to the appointment?

Bring the vehicle, its existing key, photo identification, and something that ties you to the vehicle: registration, or a document showing you are authorized to hold a key if the car belongs to someone else, such as an employer or a family member. Knowing the VIN in advance, printed or photographed from the door jamb, also helps the locksmith confirm the exact key system before arriving. Spare Car Key Duplication

Why do my fob's buttons work but the car still won't start?

This usually points to two separate systems handling two separate jobs: the remote's buttons operate the locks and alarm over radio, while a hidden chip in the fob authorizes the engine to start once it is recognized inside the vehicle. When one half is registered and the other isn't, or a chip has failed, the buttons keep working while starting authorization does not. Key Fob Programming
