Double glass doors in metal frames with a horizontal push bar, beside a brick wall, with a parking lot and trees outside.

Locksmith in Kitchener, OntarioBusiness doors, kept in order.

Storefront glass doors, back doors that take deliveries, and an office suite with too many keys floating around all have simple fixes. We rekey, repair closers and pivots, install exit devices where a crowd must leave in one motion, and keep your key list manageable.

From the shop

Every lock has a story. We listen first.

Our habit is to explain as we go. You will hear why the strike is being moved, what the new pins do, and which of the three keys on the counter is the one that now opens everything. It slows the job by a few minutes and it means you leave the visit understanding your own door, which we think is part of the service.

  • A tidy handoverKeys counted into your hand, the area cleaned, the old parts dealt with and a plain summary of the work. Then we are gone.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

When a key is lost rather than stolen, the sensible response is usually a rekey rather than new hardware. When a lock is worn, it is the reverse.

  1. Two detached brass lock cylinders and four house keys on a wooden counter. — Lock Rekeying, Kitchener
Lock RekeyingYour basement tenant has given notice, and a new one arrives on the first. The lock on the separate entrance works perfectly well.
  2. Person holding a silver-colored lock beside an open wooden door with exposed circular holes and a latch at its edge. — Deadbolt Installation, Kitchener
Deadbolt InstallationThe door from the garage into the kitchen closes on a passage knob with no lock at all. Anyone who opens the garage is one turn of a handle from the house, and the insurance renewal form has a question about exactly…
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Kitchener
Lock Replacement & UpgradeSomeone tried the back door while you were away. The jamb is splintered around the strike, the bolt is bent, and the knob turns with a grinding feel.
  4. Person holding a long door handle and rectangular lock case beside an open wooden door with exposed hardware recesses. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Kitchener
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceAfter a wet summer the entry door sits lower in its frame. The lock works perfectly when the door is open, but with it shut you have to lift the handle and shoulder the door to get the deadbolt to throw.
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Kitchener
Smart Lock InstallationThere are four copies of the front-door key floating around: one with the cleaner, one with a neighbour, one on a hook at your parents' place, and one you honestly cannot account for. You would rather hand out codes you…
  6. Pale blue garden gate with a black lever latch between light stone pillars. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Kitchener
Gate & Building Entry LocksA neighbour mentions, in passing, that the key from three tenants ago still lets him into the building's front door. Nobody changed it after he moved out, and now the property manager wants to know exactly how many keys…
  7. Detached threaded cam lock and mounting washer on a workbench in front of closed mail compartments. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Kitchener
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe little brass key for your curbside mailbox was on the same ring as the one you lost at the gym last week. The lock itself is fine, but whoever finds that ring now has a way into your mail as well.

UsuallyHave the mailbox lock replaced through management.

Someone in the building has a key to your unit. The usual fix

WhyThe cylinder is re-pinned so only your new keys work; any building access key is preserved.

You jiggle the key a little and the old deadbolt opens even when the cut does not look quite right. The usual fix

UsuallyHigh Security Locks

WhyThe service begins with a conversation about what the door protects and what worries you, then a close look at the door as a whole: the cylinder, the bolt, the strike, the frame, the hinges and any glass nearby.

Two people left over the summer and the keys they handed back came up one short. The usual fix

UsuallyCommercial Rekeying

WhyFor most business doors, rekeying is the sensible middle path between doing nothing and buying new hardware.

How a visit goes

Steel-clad and fibreglass doors, the common insulated entry doors in newer subdivisions, take a deadbolt happily as long as they are cut for it properly. The skin is thin metal or resin over a foam core, often with a wood block at lock height, so the cross bore is made with a hole saw suited to the…

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Talking through how you live

Who comes and goes, whether you want codes or phone access, how the door is used in winter. The answers shape which lock suits you and how it should be set up.

  2. 2 of 3

    Fitting it to the door

We check the door alignment before mounting anything, because a smart lock needs a door that closes freely. Then we install, wire or pair it and set the first codes with you.

  3. 3 of 3

    Showing you the controls

We walk through adding and removing codes, changing batteries and what to do if the electronics ever sulk. You leave able to manage it yourself.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 49%Homes of every age

About 49% of homes in Kitchener were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older frames and newer frames fail in different ways. Settled wood pulls strikes out of line; new framing settles as it dries. A locksmith used to a mixed area recognises which he is looking at and adjusts accordingly.

  • 48%

Single-detached houses make up about 48% of homes in Kitchener (2021 Census).

Where housing is mixed, the same street can hold a solid wood front door, a steel townhouse door and a metal-clad suite door. A locksmith fits each with hardware suited to its construction, so every neighbour ends up with a door that locks properly.

Questions people ask us

(226) 806-0633

Should I choose a single-cylinder or a double-cylinder deadbolt?

For any door people leave the house through, a single cylinder with an inside thumb-turn is the sensible choice, and provincial building rules for dwellings call for exit doors that open from inside without a key. Double-cylinder bolts are keyed on both faces and are sometimes proposed where glass is near the lock, but a captive thumb-turn, laminated glass, or a tested security-film system with its specified attachment, addresses that without a key on the inside.

What do backset and bore mean, and why does the locksmith ask?

Two measurements decide whether a deadbolt fits your door. Bore is the diameter of the big hole through the face, 54 mm on most current hardware. Backset is how far the centre of that hole sits from the door's edge, 60 mm or 70 mm on nearly all residential doors. A replacement must match both to use the existing holes, and a fresh installation is cut to match the knob below, so knowing them ahead puts the right hardware on the van.

The door has to be pulled before the old bolt will lock. Will a new one fix that?

The new bolt will only lock as smoothly as the door and frame let it, so the locksmith deals with the cause as part of the installation. A door that has sagged on loose hinges gets longer hinge screws or a shim, thick weatherstrip is trimmed, and the strike is set from the bolt's actual position with the door closed. The pocket is bored deep enough for a full throw. Afterwards the bolt should slide with fingertip effort.

What is bumping, and does this stop it?

Bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck while under light turning pressure, bouncing the pins to the shear line for an instant so an ordinary cylinder opens. It works on many standard pin tumblers. A high security cylinder needs its sidebar released by separately positioned finger or rotating pins at the same moment, and a bump key cannot set those, so the plug stays locked. It is one of the clearest advantages of the upgrade.
