Locksmith in Forest Heights, OntarioOne keyfor every door

Houses in Forest Heights collect locks over the years: a front door from one decade, a side entry from another, a garage door that takes its own key. We rekey them all to a single key so the ring in your pocket finally gets lighter, and set up a spare that lives somewhere sensible.

Where to start

High security

High Security Locks

Layers, not a single product, are what make high security. A pick-resistant cylinder, a hardened deadbolt with a long throw, a strike screwed into the framing, hinges that cannot be pulled and a door that does not flex.

Book new keys for your place in Forest Heights

Smart locks, keypads and fobs are only worth fitting to doors in Forest Heights that are mechanically sound. So we check alignment and the bore first, install the hardware, then sit with you while codes are set and a phone is paired. Every electronic lock we fit keeps a mechanical key as a backup, and you leave knowing how to use both.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 49%Homes of every age

About 49% of homes in Kitchener were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

In an area of varied housing ages, rekeying is the one job that fits every door. Old cylinders and new ones both take fresh pins, so a household moving into either kind of home can start with keys that nobody else holds.

  • 48%

Single-detached houses make up about 48% of homes in Kitchener (2021 Census).

Where housing types are mixed, the same lost-key call means different things. In a house, rekey every door on the property. In an apartment, rekey the suite door and check with management about the common entrance. The locksmith asks which it is first.

Home Lockout Service

After a week of humid weather the back door has swollen in its frame. The key turns, you can feel the bolt trying to move, but it is jammed hard against the strike plate and the door refuses to open.

Questions people ask us

(226) 806-0633

Can a frozen lock be opened, and how do I stop it freezing again?

Frozen cylinders open well with patience: lock de-icer or gentle warming melts the ice so the plug turns, and the cylinder is then dried and treated with a dry lubricant that sheds moisture. Hot water is avoided because it refreezes and can crack cold metal. To prevent a repeat, keep a storm door closed over the main lock, fit a keyhole cover on exposed side doors, and carry a small de-icer in your coat or car through the freeze-thaw months.

Does stamping keys 'do not duplicate' stop copies?

It asks; it does not compel. The stamp is a request that a key-cutting counter may or may not honour, and manufacturers say as much. Real control comes from a restricted keyway, whose blanks are issued only through authorised channels against a key card, or simply from knowing how many keys exist and who holds them. A rekey resets that count to a number you chose.

How do I look after a deadbolt once it is installed?

Very little is needed. Each spring and autumn, lock the door from inside and feel whether the bolt still goes home without the door being pulled; if it hesitates, the door has moved with the season and a small strike adjustment restores it. Whatever lubricant the lock's own maker specifies keeps it smooth, often a dry PTFE or graphite type in the keyway and along the bolt, though some cylinders are meant to be serviced with oil. In winter, wipe road salt off the outside trim to protect the finish.

Is there anything different about steel or fibreglass doors?

The lock hardware is the same; the door construction changes the method. Steel and fibreglass doors have a wooden or composite block inside the lock stile, and existing bores are used wherever possible. Where a new deadbolt must be added, the locksmith drills with a jig and bits suited to the skin so the hole is clean and square, and fits an edge plate designed for that door. Insulated doors also move less with humidity, so alignment tends to hold well.

Is a fireproof safe also resistant to a break-in?

Not automatically. Fire resistance comes from an insulated, sealed construction that is not necessarily built to resist tools, while burglary resistance comes from thick steel and hardened plate that is not necessarily built to survive a sustained fire. Some units are built and rated to both standards at once, but a fire-only safe left unrated for burglary should not be assumed to hold up against a determined attempt with tools.
