High Security Locks in Country Hills

A colleague showed you a video of a lock being opened with a bump key in a few seconds. Then you went home and noticed your own deadbolt is the same style, bought at a hardware store a decade ago.

High Security Locks

In plain words

Most break-ins do not involve picking; they involve a boot, a pry bar or a key that should never have been copied. High security hardware answers all three. A deadbolt with a full one-inch throw and a hardened core resists sawing and kicking, a reinforced strike with three-inch screws keeps the jamb whole, and a patented keyway means a copy can only be made through the locksmith who holds your system. The pick, bump and drill resistance of the cylinder is the layer on top. The locksmith's job is to fit those layers to your particular door and your particular worries.

Sound familiar?

You have lost count of how many people have had a key to your house over the years: cleaners, a contractor, a former partner, the previous owner's family. The lock still works, but you no longer know who else it works for.

How the visit goes

How the visit goes

  1. The bolt, the pocket and the strike

A deadbolt is only as good as how far it reaches and what it reaches into. The locksmith measures the throw of the bolt with the door closed, checks that it fully extends without the door being lifted or pushed, and looks at the pocket it enters in the jamb. A shallow pocket, a stamped strike plate and screws barely longer than a thumbnail are the usual finding on a builder-grade door. Then the frame is examined for splits, soft wood and gaps behind the jamb, since a kick lands on the strike, not on the cylinder.

  2. Upgrading the cylinder in place

Where the existing lock body is sound, the locksmith removes the ordinary cylinder and fits a high-security one of the same format, so your deadbolt or lever stays and only the working heart changes. The new cylinder brings a sidebar released by finger or rotating pins, hardened steel inserts in the path of a drill, and a keyway that accepts only the controlled blank. Keys are cut from code on a machine that handles the side bitting. The tailpiece or cam is matched so the bolt throws fully, then the cylinder is fixed with its set screw and tested with every key.

  3. Fewer keys, clearer purpose

Many customers finish the visit carrying fewer keys than they started with. Exterior doors keyed alike mean one key for the house; a small master system means a manager carries one key for the whole premises. Each key has a known job. The locksmith explains which key opens which door and leaves that in writing, so the tenth person to ask does not get a shrug. Should you add a door later, a gate, a garage entry or a new office, it can join the same system so you keep the single-key convenience without opening a fresh keyway.

What affects the quote

Same fees day, night or weekend

  1. 1Hinge and door edge work

Long hinge screws, a hinge-side security stud or repair to a chewed door edge are small items that add up on a door that has been forced before.

  2. 2Glass near the lock

Sidelights or glazed panels beside the deadbolt may call for a different function or extra hardware to keep the inside turn out of reach, always keeping easy exit in view.

  3. 3Number of keys cut

Every key is cut from code on a machine that handles side bitting or angled cuts, so the count of keys you want at handover is a real line rather than a rounding error.

High Security Locks: questions

What is bumping, and does this stop it?

Bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck while under light turning pressure, bouncing the pins to the shear line for an instant so an ordinary cylinder opens. It works on many standard pin tumblers. A high security cylinder needs its sidebar released by separately positioned finger or rotating pins at the same moment, and a bump key cannot set those, so the plug stays locked. It is one of the clearest advantages of the upgrade.

How long does the installation take?

A cylinder swap with new keys on one door is a short visit. A new deadbolt, reinforced strike and frame repair takes longer, and several doors keyed to a plan take longer again, mostly in bench time pinning cylinders. The locksmith gives you a realistic estimate once the doors have been looked at, because the frame condition and the door preparation matter more than the count of locks alone.

Can a high security cylinder be rekeyed later?

Yes. Like any pin tumbler it can be repinned to a new combination by a locksmith who holds the system, so a departed employee's key can be retired without replacing hardware. Some lines use interchangeable cores that swap in moments with a control key, which suits businesses with frequent turnover. Rekeying stays within your registered keyway, so the key control you paid for continues after the change.
